FAQ > What is Social Security Disability? > Do I get insurance with Social Security?
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides Medicare insurance after an individual has received disability benefits for 24 months. This includes months in which back benefits were awarded.
For example: if an individual is found disabled on January 1, 2012 and is paid benefits back to January 1, 2011, the individual may be eligible for Medicare coverage as of January 2013 (after being "in pay status" for 24 months).
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits provide Medicaid coverage, with no waiting period, back to the date benefits begin.
